One-Day Bath Liners vs a Full Bathroom Remodel: What Each Really Covers
A one-day bath liner is a custom-made acrylic or PVC shell fitted over your existing tub, and it changes the surface you see, not what is behind it. This Old House puts a liner at about $2,656 to $10,110, installed in 6 to 8 hours after a 4 to 8 week wait for the custom part, compared with about $1,961 to $9,239 to replace the tub and $330 to $630 to refinish it. A full bathroom remodel costs more, but it is the only option that lets you fix hidden water damage, move fixtures or change the layout.

Bathroom project - T&JSo the real question is not which is cheaper, but what condition your bathroom is in. This guide shows what a liner system covers, what it leaves alone, and how to decide.
What a Liner System Covers, and What It Leaves Alone
A liner is built from precise measurements of your tub and bonded over it with tape and adhesive; the installer replaces the drain and overflow and caulks the seams, and you can bathe the same evening. Many companies also sell matching wall panels for the shower area. Everything else in the room stays as it is unless it is quoted separately.
| Part of the bathroom | Liner system | Full remodel |
|---|---|---|
| Tub surface | New acrylic or PVC shell over the old tub | New tub, or a walk-in shower in its place |
| Shower walls | Panels over the existing walls, if included | New waterproofing, backer board and tile or panels |
| What is behind the walls and under the tub | Stays as it is, unseen | Opened up, inspected and repaired |
| Plumbing and valves | Drain and overflow replaced; supply valves stay unless quoted | Replaced or relocated as needed |
| Toilet, vanity, floor, lighting, fan | Not included unless quoted separately | Included in the scope |
| Layout | Stays the same | Can change |
A tub liner runs about $2,656 to $10,110 in This Old House's 2026 figures, which overlaps with the $1,961 to $9,239 range for replacing the tub outright.
Does a One-Day Bath Company Do the Whole Bathroom?
Usually not. The core product is the tub and the shower walls. Some companies sell add-ons, but a toilet, vanity, flooring, lighting or a new exhaust fan is a separate line in the contract, if it is offered at all. Before you sign, ask for an itemized list of exactly what is being replaced and what is being covered over.
Bathroom - T&JWhen a Liner Makes Sense
- The tub and walls are sound. No soft spots in the floor, no loose tile, no signs of leaks below the bathroom.
- You are happy with the layout. A liner keeps the tub where it is.
- You want the bathroom usable fast. Installation takes 6 to 8 hours once the custom liner arrives.
- The tub is a good candidate. Many liner companies will not work over fiberglass or acrylic tubs because they flex too much; refinishing is often the better route for those.
When a Full Remodel Is the Better Call
- There are signs of water damage. A stained ceiling below, a soft floor or loose wall tile means water has been getting where it should not. A liner covers the surface; it does not repair what is underneath.
- You want to change how the room works. Converting the tub to a walk-in shower, moving the toilet or adding storage means a remodel; see our tub-to-shower conversion cost guide.
- The room has moisture problems. Wisconsin's Uniform Dwelling Code calls for a bathroom exhaust fan rated at least 50 cubic feet per minute, or 20 if it runs continuously, vented to the outside. If yours falls short or vents into the attic, a remodel is the time to fix it; see our exhaust fan installation cost guide.
Water can get trapped between a liner and the old tub, so check regularly for seepage, clean with nonabrasive cleaners and avoid suction-cup bath mats that hold moisture.
Cost Compared
| Option | Published cost | Typical lifespan |
|---|---|---|
| Refinishing the existing tub | About $330-$630 | 5-10 years |
| Acrylic or PVC tub liner | About $2,656-$10,110 | Up to 15 years with proper care |
| Replacing the tub | About $1,961-$9,239 | A new tub |
| Full bathroom remodel | Depends on size and scope | New surfaces, fixtures and repairs |
The liner and replacement ranges overlap, so compare written quotes for both before you decide. For a full remodel budget, see our realistic bathroom remodel budget guide and bathtub replacement cost in Wisconsin.
Bathroom - T&JQuestions to Ask Before You Choose
What exactly is being replaced, and what is being covered?
Get a line for the tub, the walls, the drain and overflow, the valve and any trim.
Will someone check what is behind the old surface?
If the answer is no, ask how a leak or soft subfloor would be found and who pays to fix it.
Does my tub qualify?
Ask whether the product can go over your tub material, since many companies will not line fiberglass or acrylic tubs.
How long is the wait, and how long is the install?
Expect about 4 to 8 weeks for a custom liner and 6 to 8 hours to install it.
What does the warranty cover?
Ask whether it covers the product only or also the labor, and what voids it.
Before You Sign at the Kitchen Table: Your Right to Cancel
One-day bath systems are often sold during an in-home appointment. Under the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule, you generally have until midnight of the third business day to cancel a sale of $25 or more made at your home, for a full refund within 10 business days of your notice. Saturdays count as business days, but Sundays and federal holidays do not, and the seller must tell you about this right and give you two copies of a cancellation form. Whatever you choose, get the scope and price in writing; our guide to what a Wisconsin remodeling contract must include explains what to look for.

Frequently asked questions
Does a one-day bath company remodel the whole bathroom?
Usually not. The core product is a new surface over the tub and, often, panels over the shower walls. A toilet, vanity, floor, lighting or fan is a separate item if it is offered, so ask for an itemized list before you sign.
Is a bath liner worth it?
It can be when the tub and walls are sound, you like the layout and you want a fast update. If there are signs of water damage or you want a different layout, a remodel addresses what a liner would only cover up. Liner prices overlap with replacing the tub, so compare quotes for both.
How long does a bath liner last?
This Old House puts a liner at up to 15 years with proper care, compared with 5 to 10 years for refinishing.
Can a liner go over a fiberglass tub?
Often not. Many liner companies will not work over fiberglass or acrylic tubs because they flex too much, and refinishing is often recommended for those materials instead.
Can mold grow behind a bath liner?
Water can get trapped between a liner and the old tub, so check regularly for seepage and avoid suction-cup mats that hold moisture. A liner does not fix damage that is already behind the walls.
How much does a bath liner cost?
About $2,656 to $10,110 in This Old House's 2026 figures, compared with about $1,961 to $9,239 to replace the tub and $330 to $630 to refinish it.
Can I cancel a bathroom contract I signed at home?
Under the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule you generally have until midnight of the third business day to cancel a sale of $25 or more made at your home, and the seller must give you a cancellation form.
