Most cabinet water damage starts under the kitchen sink, where a slow drip can soak the cabinet floor for months before anyone sees it. Census figures show the median Hartland home was built in 1983 and 40% were built in 1990 or later. In a home from those decades that still has its original kitchen, the cabinets and the plumbing connections under the sink are roughly 25 to 45 years old. This guide covers what each repair costs, when a cabinet can be saved, and what to do in the first 48 hours.

What Water-Damaged Cabinet Repairs Cost

RepairHomewyse national cost (May 2026)
Find a hidden plumbing leak$241 to $292 per leak
Replace a leaking sink trap$313 to $393
Repair a kitchen sink drain$284 to $347
Replace a water shut-off valve$277 to $333 per valve
Basic cabinet repair (remove, repair and reset one cabinet)$383 to $577 per cabinet
New base cabinet, installed$672 to $1,015 per cabinet
Remove old kitchen cabinets$28.73 to $59.48 per linear foot
Repair a water-damaged subfloor$26.13 to $44.95 per sq ft
Repair water-damaged wall material and framing$20.58 to $37.63 per sq ft

The cabinet, removal and subfloor rows come from Homewyse's cabinet and subfloor calculators, and the leak, drain, valve and wall rows from its plumbing and water damage calculators. They are national basic costs for work in favorable conditions, so treat them as a starting point, not a bid.

Here are two common outcomes, added up from those line items.

  • Small leak, cabinet saved. A new sink trap plus a basic cabinet repair comes to about $700 to $970.
  • Sink base replaced. A new sink trap, a new installed base cabinet and 10 square feet of subfloor repair, the smallest area Homewyse prices, come to about $1,250 to $1,860.

Neither total includes lifting the sink and countertop off and resetting them if the old cabinet cannot be cut out from underneath, matching new doors to the rest of the kitchen, or drying equipment. Homewyse prices its base cabinet with a veneer plywood bottom, sides and shelves and a solid wood face frame, which is a useful benchmark when you compare what each bid includes.

Key Stat

The EPA says the average household's leaks waste more than 9,300 gallons of water a year, and 9% of homes have leaks that waste 50 gallons or more a day.

Can a Water-Damaged Cabinet Be Repaired?

Often it can, if the damage stays in the cabinet floor and the rest of the box is still solid.

  • Usually repairable. The floor panel is stained or soft, but the sides, face frame and doors are sound. The damaged bottom can be cut out and replaced with a new panel, and the cabinet reset level.
  • Usually replaced. The sides have swollen, the face frame has pulled away, the doors no longer close, or mold has grown into the box. Particleboard that has soaked up water tends to stay swollen after it dries.
  • Check the floor underneath. Once the cabinet floor is out, look at the kitchen subfloor below it. Our subfloor replacement cost guide explains when it has to be cut out.
  • Check the wall behind. A leak at the supply valves can wet the drywall behind the cabinet, which is the wall repair row in the table above.

Where Leaks Under a Kitchen Sink Start

  • Supply lines and shut-off valves. The lines from the valves to the faucet, and the valves themselves, can drip at their connections. The EPA lists leaking valves among the most common household leaks.
  • The drain trap. The curved trap under the sink is held together with slip joints that can loosen over time.
  • The sink drain. The strainer where the sink meets the drain can leak at its seal.
  • The faucet. Water can run down from a worn faucet base or sprayer hose into the cabinet.
  • The dishwasher and disposal. Their drain and supply connections usually sit in the same cabinet, so a leak at either one ends up on the same floor.
Pro Tip

The EPA suggests reading your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter moves at all, you probably have a leak.

What to Do in the First 48 Hours

1

Shut off the water

at the valves under the sink, or at the main if those valves will not close.

2

Empty the cabinet and dry it.

The EPA says water-damaged areas should be dried within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. Leave the doors open and run a fan.

3

Take photos

of the damage, the leak and any failed part before anything is thrown out.

4

Call your insurance agent

if the damage is more than a small spot.

5

Look for mold.

The EPA says a moldy area smaller than about 10 square feet can usually be cleaned by the homeowner, while a larger area or a lot of water damage calls for professional cleanup guidance.

Watch Out

If water has reached the outlet or the disposal and dishwasher wiring under the sink, switch off that circuit at the panel before you touch anything.

Will Homeowners Insurance Pay for It?

Sometimes. Wisconsin's Office of the Commissioner of Insurance lists accidental discharge, leakage or overflow of water from within a plumbing system or household appliance among the perils that common homeowners policies cover. The same guide says damage resulting from neglect is not covered, and water from sewers or drains backing up is usually excluded unless you have added sewer backup coverage.

A supply line that bursts is the kind of sudden event that perils list describes. A slow drip that went unnoticed for months is harder to claim, and the wording of your own policy decides it. Ask your agent before repairs start, and keep the photos and the failed part.

Permits for Cabinet and Plumbing Repairs in Hartland

  • Village of Hartland. The village's building inspection page says building, electrical, plumbing and HVAC permits are required, and asks homeowners to contact the building inspector with questions. Replacing a cabinet box is a different job from replacing a valve or moving a drain, so ask which parts of your repair need a permit.
  • Your municipality. A Hartland mailing address does not always mean the Village of Hartland, so confirm which village or town your home is in before you call.
  • General rules. Our guide to what a homeowner can do without a permit in Wisconsin covers the basics.

Questions to Ask Before You Compare Bids

1

Has the leak been found and fixed,

and is that repair in the price?

2

Will the cabinet be repaired or replaced,

and why?

3

What is the new cabinet box made of,

plywood or particleboard?

4

Will the sink and countertop have to come off,

and is resetting them included?

5

How will the subfloor and the wall behind the cabinet be checked

for damage and mold?

6

Will the new doors or finish match

the rest of the kitchen?

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to repair a water-damaged kitchen cabinet in Hartland?

Homewyse puts a basic cabinet repair at $383 to $577 per cabinet nationally in 2026, and a new installed base cabinet at $672 to $1,015. Fixing the leak and any subfloor damage adds to that.

Can water-damaged kitchen cabinets be repaired?

Yes, when the damage is limited to the cabinet floor and the sides, face frame and doors are still solid. If the sides have swollen or mold has spread into the box, replacing the cabinet is usually the better repair.

How much does it cost to replace the bottom of a kitchen sink cabinet?

Homewyse does not price a cabinet floor panel on its own. Its basic cabinet repair, which removes, repairs and resets one cabinet, runs $383 to $577, and a whole new sink base runs $672 to $1,015 installed.

Does homeowners insurance cover water-damaged kitchen cabinets?

It can. Wisconsin's insurance regulator lists accidental leakage or discharge of water from plumbing or an appliance as a covered peril in common policies, but damage resulting from neglect is not covered. Your policy wording decides how a slow leak is treated.

What causes leaks under a kitchen sink?

The usual sources are the supply line connections, worn shut-off valves, the drain trap, the sink drain seal, the faucet, and the dishwasher and disposal connections.

How do I dry out wet kitchen cabinets?

Stop the leak, empty the cabinet, leave the doors open and run fans. The EPA says water-damaged areas should be dried within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold.

Do I need a permit to replace a kitchen sink cabinet in Hartland?

The Village of Hartland requires building, electrical, plumbing and HVAC permits for the work they cover. Ask the village building inspector which parts of your job need one, especially if valves, drains or wiring are replaced.
