Bathroom Flooring Cost in Oconomowoc, WI
New bathroom flooring costs $11.01 to $20.00 per square foot installed in 2026, according to Homewyse's national figures, or about $440 to $800 for a typical 40 square foot bathroom floor. The material makes the biggest difference. Sheet vinyl starts under $4 a square foot installed, while ceramic or porcelain tile runs about $16 to $20. Removing the old floor, repairing the subfloor and resetting the toilet come on top.

Bathroom project - T&JOconomowoc has two very different kinds of bathroom floors. Census figures show 13% of the city's homes were built before 1940 and 44% in 1990 or later, so one bathroom may have older layers over an old subfloor while the next has a fairly new floor over plywood. This guide compares the options, what each one costs, and what to check before the old floor comes up.
Bathroom Flooring Cost by Material
| Material | Installed cost per sq ft (Homewyse, May 2026) | 40 sq ft bathroom floor |
|---|---|---|
| Sheet vinyl | $3.78 to $5.25 | $150 to $210 |
| Cork | $6.91 to $9.88 | $280 to $400 |
| Laminate | $6.91 to $11.81 | $280 to $470 |
| Vinyl tile | $9.16 to $13.63 | $370 to $550 |
| Ceramic or porcelain tile | $16.38 to $20.21 | $660 to $810 |
If the subfloor is soft or water-damaged, replacing it adds $4.13 to $6.33 per square foot, or about $170 to $250 for the same 40 square feet. Our subfloor replacement cost guide explains when that is needed.
Homewyse's figures are national basic costs, and they leave out repairs, moving plumbing and permits. Small floors also carry setup and cutting time that a per-foot rate hides, so ask each bidder for a total that names the removal, the underlayment and the toilet reset.
In a This Old House bathroom survey of 1,000 respondents, ceramic or porcelain tile was the most popular floor, chosen by 48%. Natural stone and vinyl or luxury vinyl tile were each chosen by 29%.
Comparing the Options for a Bathroom Floor
- Ceramic and porcelain tile. Waterproof, easy to clean and the most popular choice over radiant floor heat. Floor tile should withstand at least 250 pounds per square inch under ASTM standards, nearly three times the 90 pound threshold for wall tile, so wall tile does not belong on a floor. For slip resistance, look for a DCOF rating of 0.42 or higher when wet. Our bathroom tile cost guide breaks down tile pricing, and our heated bathroom floor cost guide covers adding heat.
- Sheet vinyl. The most waterproof vinyl option, because a single sheet is virtually seamless. It is also the least expensive floor in the table above.
- Vinyl plank and tile. More design choice than sheet vinyl. Both main types have a waterproof core. WPC is thicker and softer underfoot, while SPC is more durable and impact-resistant.
- Natural stone. Durable and attractive, but not completely waterproof. Travertine and limestone need resealing every couple of years, while marble and granite can last up to five years between sealings.
- Cork and engineered wood. Cork is naturally insulating and comfortable underfoot. Engineered wood has a plywood base that holds up to moisture better than solid wood.
- Laminate and solid hardwood. Laminate has a wood-chip base that swells when it gets wet, and This Old House does not recommend it for bathroom floors. Solid hardwood is never a good idea in a bathroom.
Bathroom - T&JOlder Oconomowoc Bathrooms and What Is Under the Floor
Census figures show 48% of Oconomowoc's 8,025 homes were built before 1980 and 23% before 1960. In those houses, the floor you see may not be the only one.
- Asbestos in old vinyl. The EPA lists vinyl floor tiles, the backing on vinyl sheet flooring and flooring adhesives among the products that may contain asbestos. It recommends having suspect material checked by a trained asbestos professional before remodeling. If your bathroom has an older vinyl floor, have it tested before anyone sands, scrapes or tears it up.
- Layers. Some older bathrooms have one floor laid over another. Each layer raises the floor at the door and at the toilet, and removing them all adds labor.
- Lead paint on trim. Removing baseboard or door casing in a home built before 1978 can disturb lead paint. See our guide to lead paint rules when remodeling an older Wisconsin home.
- Newer homes. In a bathroom built in the last few decades, a floor replacement is often a straight swap. The old floor comes out, the subfloor is checked and the new floor goes down.
Does Flooring Go Under the Toilet and Vanity?
- The toilet. Yes. The toilet comes up, the new floor runs under it, and the toilet is reset on a new wax ring. The flange height is checked so the toilet seals properly on a thicker floor.
- The vanity. A vanity on legs gets flooring underneath it. A cabinet vanity often sits on the old floor with the new floor stopping at its base, so plan ahead if the vanity may change later.
- Matching the rest of the house. There is no rule. A threshold or transition strip at the door handles the change in height, and carrying a hallway's vinyl plank into the bathroom works well if the plank is waterproof.
Permits for Bathroom Flooring in Oconomowoc
- City of Oconomowoc. The city's Building Permits and Inspection Division enforces the Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code and takes permit applications through its online portal.
- Town or Village. The Town of Oconomowoc and the Village of Oconomowoc Lake are separate municipalities with their own permit rules, so check which one covers your address.
- When the job grows. Moving the toilet drain is plumbing work, and a heated floor needs an electrical connection. Those are the parts of a floor job where permits and inspections come in. Our guide to what a homeowner can do without a permit in Wisconsin covers the general rules.

Frequently asked questions
How much does bathroom flooring cost in Oconomowoc?
Homewyse puts installed bathroom flooring at $11.01 to $20.00 per square foot nationally in 2026, about $440 to $800 for a 40 square foot floor. Sheet vinyl costs less and tile costs more, and removal, subfloor repair and the toilet reset are extra.
What is the best flooring for a bathroom?
Ceramic or porcelain tile is the most popular choice, picked by 48% in a This Old House survey. It is waterproof, durable and works well over a heated floor. Vinyl is the main lower-cost option.
Is vinyl good for bathroom flooring?
Yes. Sheet vinyl is the most waterproof vinyl option because it is virtually seamless, and vinyl plank and tile have waterproof cores. Luxury vinyl also has a little more give underfoot than tile.
Do bathroom floors have to be tile?
No. Sheet vinyl, vinyl plank, cork and engineered wood all work in bathrooms. This Old House advises against laminate and solid hardwood, because water damages them.
Does flooring go under the toilet?
Yes. The toilet is removed, the floor is installed under it, and the toilet is reset on a new wax ring, with the flange height checked for the new floor.
Should bathroom flooring match the rest of the house?
It does not have to. Many homeowners choose tile for the bathroom and use a threshold at the door, while others carry a waterproof vinyl plank through from the hallway.
Can old bathroom vinyl contain asbestos?
It can. The EPA lists vinyl floor tiles, the backing on sheet vinyl and flooring adhesives among the products that may contain asbestos. Have older vinyl tested before it is removed.
