Bathroom Remodel Labor Cost in Wisconsin: What Each Trade Costs and How Much of a Quote Is Labor
Labor is roughly half the cost of a bathroom remodel, according to This Old House's 2026 bathroom cost guide. On a mid-range small bathroom update of $8,000 to $18,000, that is about $4,000 to $9,000 of labor. In Wisconsin, the trades doing that work earn mean wages of $40.73 an hour for plumbers, $35.49 for electricians and $31.34 for tile setters, according to May 2025 federal wage data. A contractor's billed rate is higher than the wage, because it also covers insurance, travel, tools, supervision and overhead.

Bathroom project - T&JHere is what each trade does in a bathroom remodel, why bathroom labor runs high, and how to read the labor in the quotes you are comparing.
Who Works on a Bathroom Remodel, and What They Earn in Wisconsin
| Trade | What they do in a bathroom remodel | Wisconsin mean hourly wage, May 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Construction laborers | Demolition, protection, haul-away | $27.87 |
| Carpenters | Framing changes, subfloor repair, blocking for grab bars, trim | $31.39 |
| Plumbers | Drain, vent and supply changes, shower valve, toilet and vanity hookups | $40.73 |
| Electricians | Protected outlets, lighting, exhaust fan wiring | $35.49 |
| Drywall installers | Hanging and finishing moisture-resistant board | $28.86 |
| Tile and stone setters | Waterproofing, shower walls and floor tile | $31.34 |
| Painters | Walls, ceiling and trim | $26.05 |
These are what the workers earn, not what a contractor charges. Nationally, This Old House reports plumbers billing $45 to $200 an hour and electricians $50 to $100 an hour.
In This Old House's 2026 bathroom cost guide, labor accounts for roughly half of total project costs, and 49% of homeowners it surveyed named labor as a major cost.
Why Bathroom Labor Runs High
- Many trades in a small room. A full bathroom remodel can involve demolition, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, drywall, tile and painting, each scheduled in order.
- Waiting is part of the work. Inspections of the rough plumbing and wiring, and the cure time for waterproofing and tile setting, stretch the schedule even when the room is small.
- Waterproofing is detail work. A shower that stays dry for decades depends on careful work behind the tile, and that work is labor, not material.
- Older homes hide surprises. Out-of-level floors, old piping and soft subfloor around a toilet are common finds once the old bathroom comes out.
Bathroom - T&JWhat Pushes the Labor Up or Down
| Raises labor | Keeps labor down |
|---|---|
| Moving the toilet, shower or vanity drain | Keeping fixtures where they are |
| Custom tile patterns, niches, curbless showers | Simple layouts and prefabricated shower bases or panels |
| Subfloor or framing repairs | A sound floor and walls |
| New circuits or a new exhaust fan duct run | Reusing existing wiring and ducts |
| Small, irregular rooms that slow every trade | Straightforward access and room to work |

How to Read the Labor in a Bathroom Quote
Two quotes for the same bathroom can split labor and materials very differently. To compare them fairly:
Ask for an itemized estimate
that separates demolition, plumbing, electrical, tile, drywall and finish work.
Check what is in the allowances.
A low allowance for tile or fixtures makes a quote look cheaper until you pick real products.
Ask who does each trade.
Licensed plumbers and electricians, employees or subcontractors, and who supervises the job day to day.
Confirm permits and inspections
are included, and who arranges them; see our guide to bathroom plumbing permits in Wisconsin.
Look for the waterproofing method
in writing. It is easy to leave out of a low bid.
A quote with far less labor than the others usually leaves something out: demolition, haul-away, subfloor repair, waterproofing or the trim and paint at the end. Ask what is excluded before you compare totals.
Can You Cut Labor by Doing Some Yourself?
Some homeowners save by doing demolition or painting themselves. Wisconsin law also lets an owner do plumbing and electrical work in a one-family home they own and live in, unless a local ordinance requires a license. The work still has to meet code, permits and inspections still apply, and mistakes in a wet room are expensive to fix. Our guide to doing it yourself vs hiring a pro for a bathroom remodel compares the trade-offs.

How much does a plumber charge for a bathroom remodel?
Nationally, This Old House reports plumbers billing $45 to $200 an hour. In Wisconsin, plumbers earned a mean wage of $40.73 an hour in May 2025; billed rates are higher because they include overhead.

What do tile installers earn in Wisconsin?
Tile and stone setters earned a mean wage of $31.34 an hour in Wisconsin in May 2025. Contractors bill more than the wage to cover overhead.
Can I do my own plumbing in Wisconsin?
Yes, in a one-family home you own and live in, unless a local ordinance requires a licensed plumber. The work must meet code and pass inspection.
Why is bathroom remodel labor so expensive?
A small room needs many trades in sequence, with inspections and cure times in between, and the waterproofing behind the tile is careful work.
Should a bathroom quote list labor and materials separately?
It helps. An itemized estimate that separates labor, materials and allowances is the easiest way to compare bids.
