Where the Money Actually Goes
Templating. A fabricator measures the installed cabinets digitally after they are set and levelled. This is why countertops cannot be ordered before cabinets are in, and why the gap between demolition and finished countertop is usually one to three weeks.

Cutouts. An undermount sink cutout is more work than a drop-in because the exposed edge is polished. Expect $150 to $400 per cutout beyond the basic price for sinks and cooktops.
Removal and disposal. Taking out old tops, particularly tile set in mortar or a solid stone slab, is heavy work and should be a visible line at $200 to $600.
Plumbing. Disconnection and reconnection of the sink, faucet and disposal. Some quotes exclude this and expect you to arrange a plumber, which is fine when stated.
Seams. Larger kitchens need seams, and where the fabricator places them affects how visible they are. A good fabricator plans seams to fall where the eye does not go.
Backsplash. A 4-inch slab backsplash cut from the same material is a common add. Full-height slab backsplashes cost considerably more and change the look entirely.
Choosing the Material Honestly
Quartz is what we install most, and for most Wisconsin households it is the right answer. Engineered, non-porous, no sealing, consistent pattern so what you see in the showroom is what arrives, and it handles daily family use. Its weaknesses are heat, since a hot pan can mark it, and direct sunlight over years in a very bright kitchen.

Porcelain slab is very hard, heat-proof and UV-stable, and it is harder to fabricate, which shows in the labour cost.

Does It Need a Permit?
Replacing countertops does not require a permit in Wisconsin. It is a finish material, not structural or system work.
The exception is plumbing.
