What Makes a Sussex Basement Different
This is where a Sussex project diverges from one in an older Milwaukee County neighborhood.
Ceiling height is usually not the problem here. Wisconsin requires 7 feet of finished ceiling height for habitable basement space. In homes built from the 1970s onward that is typically comfortable even after a finished floor and a soffit for ductwork. Many newer Sussex homes are already roughed in. Builders in the 1990s and 2000s frequently stubbed a bathroom drain into the slab in anticipation of a future finish. If yours has one, you may save several thousand dollars on the bathroom, because the expensive part is breaking and re-pouring concrete, not setting the fixtures. Find out before you get quotes. Water is about grading and drainage, not failing walls. Poured foundations of this era rarely weep the way rubble and stone do.
